Petition for Wessex Assembly

The referendum on Scottish independence completely opened the door for discussions on devolution to and within England. We believe such devolution should include democratically elected Assemblies for the regions of England, including Wessex. Furthermore we call for the same powers to be passed to a Wessex Assembly as those currently devolved to Scotland.
Wessex is a historic region with an increasing sense of its own culture and identity and possesses a population larger than that of both Wales and Scotland. Therefore a Wessex Assembly would improve representation and the democratic process. We also believe a structure of Regional Assemblies (including Wessex) would be successful, as has been proved with similar regional democracies in countries such as Germany with its Lander System and Switzerland with its Cantons. With these factors we believe the people of Wessex should be given the same democratic right to self-determination as the residents of Scotland and Wales. Such a settlement would therefore be part of any plans for devolution within England.
We call on central government to recognise and work with the people of Wessex to formulate a detailed proposal for a law-making Wessex Assembly, which can then be put to the electorate in a binding referendum
