The LGBT community is excited to have President Obama's support for same-sex marriage. However, he stopped short on that support stating he would leave it up to the states to decide! Where does that leave the issue of same-sex marriage, with no federal policy to legalize same-sex marriage? OUT IN THE COLD.
Why? 1. States constitutions are passing laws that BAN same-sex marriage (e.g. North Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, a few of approximately 30). 2. States have REVOKED same-sex marriage rights (e.g. California). 3. A same-sex marriage license issued in one state (e.g. Vermont, New York, Iowa, ect.) IS NOT VALID OR VOID in other state (e.g. New Jersey, Georgia, ect.). 4. Same-sex marriages ARE NOT RECOGNIZED by the federal government (e.g. taxes).
This partial support still allows for violation of this community's civil rights. A persons civil rights should not be decided by each individual state.
If Obama is going to use the LGBT community as part of his divide and conquer political playbook to win 2012 as the political divide or cultural war. He needs to step up to the plate!
This community owes it to themselves to INSIST on FULL SUPPORT NOT PARTIAL SUPPORT for same-sex marriage! A FEDERAL POLICY which states that SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IS FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED! Thus the right to marry can not be denied by any state.
