With nearly one in three African American men between the ages of 20–29 under some form of criminal justice supervision most often as a result of illegal drug trading, Morehouse College, an all male Historically Black College is the perfect venue to address the impact of three decades of Federal and States’ initiatives failure to combat the illegal drug trade here in America.
As the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most influential Morehouse Alumni who died to liberate future generations from the perils of poverty and violence, as a backdrop, President Obama must address his inability to combat, acknowledge or even pay lip service to the country’s failed drug policy. In fact, many argue he has perpetuated these destructive policies.
He must speak to this issue not because he is most prominent and powerful member of the black community, or as the leader of the free world, or even for the sake of the thousands of students sitting in white lawn chairs at graduation; he must speak on this issue for the legions of other black men, the graduates' cohorts, friends, cousins, nephews, brothers, fathers, sons and families who have been or are currently imprisoned under his watch.
