My severely disabled, nonverbal son was nearly strangled to death on May 21 by a harness on his wheelchair that had been tightened grossly incorrectly taut around his throat. This neglectful, incompetent action caused my son to come off a 40 minute bus ride turning blue, not breathing well, petechiae on his face from the strain and strangulation marks embedded around his neck. He had to be subjected to a CT scan with contrast due to swallowing issues and pain. No one is taking responsibility. No one is admitting wrongdoing. And it appears no criminal charges will be filed. This must not happen to any other child! The responsible party/parties must be held accountable. This is a special needs school, so training has been done. What happened to my son was either neglect/child endangerment at the very least, and at the very worst, an intentional act of abuse. Our special needs children have only us parents as their voices. We will be heard in this case. Not only did I nearly lose my precious son, but he continues to suffer the physical consequences of this terrible injury. As well, I am left trying to figure out his educational plan for this Fall. The district should provide in home schooling and therapies for my son, as there is certainly no way he will be returning to this school or riding on a school bus again. Action is needed!
