Mississippi State University students want the option for classes to be Pass/Fail

We all started this semester with the expectation that through in-person classes, in-person tutoring, and other resources available to the student population, we could learn in the way Mississippi State University intended. Due to COVID-19, and the necessary accommodations, the full weight, and efficacy of those resources have been undermined. Mississippi State University decided to move all courses to online courses. Although this may be the most appropriate solution, we feel that better options exist to supplement this dramatic change in resources. Adopting a Pass/Fail approach this semester will help students have more opportunities to adjust to our new normal without feeling that everything is lost or their GPA is in jeopardy.
Online teaching is a unique skill that cannot be mastered in a couple of hours or days. Expecting students to also master online learning in a week or so is not fair or feasible. A pass/fail grading policy would allow students to transition smoothly without the additional anxiety of navigating grades in this uncertain time. Other universities in the SEC and around the U.S are looking into this option because they understand the importance and significance of this change!
Giving students the option to either opt-in or out of the Pass/Fail grading policy allows students who have worked really hard for their grades so far to keep their grades and the students who want the Pass/Fail grading policy can opt-in for that option.
There are many more reasons why this is the most efficient way for the MSU population to move forward but please, if you agree with this petition, sign it!
