Open Theatres in South Africa!

0 have signed. Let’s get to 7,500!

Since the enforcement of the lockdown in March 2020, theatres and entertainment venues in South Africa have been closed for months.  Under the current restrictions, they have been forced to operate for extremely limited audiences, which is economically unviable. Most of our theatres and entertainment venues are closed at the moment or was forced to close it doors!  Theatres should never be dark!  The revenue of entertainment and theatre in SA is in the region of more than R147 billion rand per year.  Thousands of actors, singers, musicians, stage managers, ticketing agents, managers, technicians, cleaners, ushers, writers, producers, directors, theatre administrators, etc. have lost their jobs and income.  With all the Covid-19 regulations, theatres have never been singled out as an industry on its own as it was always grouped with "events"!

Mr. President, we urge you to open theatres and entertainment venues as soon as possible to full capacity.  We appreciate and honour the fact that Covid-19 is real and a definite threat. Theatre Patrons and Theatre Administrators are responsible people that will always follow all the Covid-19 regulations.  We would even be grateful if the capacity can just be increased to 50-75%, but at this stage it is important to get theatres operational again.

With regard to the small number of audience members (50) that are presently allowed in theatres double standards prevail with regard to regulations for example the number of people allowed in aeroplanes, shopping malls, airports, buses, restaurants, etc.

Audiences and theatre supporters are also supporting the opening of theatres and entertainment venues as soon as possible.
