David Williams started this petition to The Police Minister Tasmania - Mark Shelton and

Once again changes happen to legislation pertaining to firearms where Law Abiding Firearms Owners or Firearms Dealers are not consulted to come up with common sense practices and procedures that are in the best interests of all including those at Firearms Services and Tasmania Police.

Recently Tasmanian Dealers had an email dumped on them of ill thought out changes to Permits To Acquire Firearms. Changes that lack all logic and common sense, and the only purpose they serve is to negatively impact dealers and shooters alike and no doubt a backlash from that community by way of complaints by phone and email or petitions such as this one.

Being able to put a PTA on hold indefinitely was a good thing and there was many common sense logical reasons for this. The shooter knows he has successfully got a permit for the firearm, those with limited finances are able to pay it off over time while they wait for that firearm to come in and the dealer is all but guaranteed a sale while you wait it's often the case you will also buy accessories for that firearm from the same dealer which is yet another positive for his business and the local economy, the shooter, the dealer, and even importers such as NIOA have no direct control over how long firearms first take to come into the country, nor how long it eventually takes to get to the dealer for the shooter to finally be able to take home with them, if delays caused by the powers at be for example where they have a hissy fit over a firearms appearance that leads to a delay of that firearm or for those ordering firearms that have chassis systems that are not yet "approved" by their special committee are delayed getting through to the dealer within the 90 days you can guarantee Firearms Service won't issue an extension on what is not a shooter, dealer or importers mistake or cause which may be in part held up by Firearms Services processes itself! What happens if a PTA expires and you resubmit it having already been approved the first time and this time around your PTA gets denied and yet the dealer has already gone and ordered/paid for the firearm and you have as well? This is an unnecessary dishonest practice that many will see as revenue raising and i don't disagree! It just isn't a practical change!

We so often here of the NFA as being a national agreement yet all states are all over the place in how they go about managing anything firearms related.

Submitting a PTA Online is a big example, NSW and QLD do this but the rest of the states are living in the dark ages stuck on pen and paper. There are far less people in Tasmania so implementing such a system should be even easier to put in place! At least all those currently with PTA's on hold indefinitely will be honoured.

We now have a new Police Minister in Mark Shelton, hopefully he is far more open minded, positive and practical than the departed Michael Ferguson!
