I want to advocate for putting an end to felony disenfranchisement in the United States.  Although these laws differ from state to state, this petition is to make all states in the US allow criminals and ex-criminals their right to vote. The term “disenfranchisement” refers to the fact that convicted felons’ rightful ability to vote is being revoked from them— this is happening all over the United States! I am not condoning illegal acts; committing a crime should be a punishable offense. However, what do voting rights have to do with the crime that has been committed? These two actions are not related; therefore, as it is stated in the Fourteenth Amendment in the US Constitution: “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; ...” Also, the Fifteenth Amendment declares, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Please join me in standing up for these incarcerated people or people who have served their jail time and are still being denied their basic human rights, of which were solidified in writing centuries and centuries ago by one of our Founding Fathers— James Madison.
