#FREEVOINA. FREE OLEG!! (Eng)

Three days ago, in Venice, Oleg Vorotnikov, member of the Voina Art Group was hardly beaten during a fight. When the police arrived on the spot they decided to take Oleg into custody. Voina are well known for their artistic actions which have powerfully critiqued authoritarian rule, homophobia, the use of religion as an instrument of political persecution, and the restriction of free spee‎ch and thought. Unfortunately Oleg was identified as the target of an international arrest warrant, arrested and brought to the prison of Venice, waiting for the extradition procedure to start. We don't want the Italian justice to send back Oleg to Russia, we want Oleg to be released and free again. We know that Oleg and his family were forced to abandon their homeland because of political persecution, because the Russian Government arrested several members of Voina not liking the message of freedom expressed through their art. Russia is in no way new to the repression of art and freedom of speech. Of course Oleg will face no fair trial if sent back home.

Oleg is not alone and currently followed by a lawyer, but now we need the solidarity of all the art and intellectual community around the world. Voina (who were co-curator of the last Berlin Biennale) must be free, Oleg must come back to his partner and his kids!

#FREEVOINA. OLEG LIBERO!! (Ita)
