Save Newry’s 200yr old Oak Trees

Save Newry’s 200yr old Oak Trees
Stop the cutting of Newry’s 200yr old+ Oak Trees, which are believed to be the last standing row of historical oaks in Newry.
The plan to cut the row of 17+ Oak trees supports the £2.9m Newry Flood Alleviation Scheme for Newry in order to prevent flood risk to commercial properties located at the Greenbank Industrial Estate area. Although we acknowledge this work is important, we do not have substantial evidence or reason to believe it is necessary to terminate our healthy trees. All we are asking is for the Department for Infrastructure (Dfi) to revisit the plans and come up with alternative ways, which won’t involve the chop.
These trees, (which generations living on the old Warrenpoint road have grown up watching) are of great benefit to the local environment, sucking up hundreds of gallons a day of water over the summer months, which in turn keeps water levels down naturally. To cut them down would be an act of environmental vandalism.
