Lets talk about Sickle Cell.

Lets talk about Sickle Cell.
Sickle Cell anemia is a condition mostly prevalent in Africa. Over 300,000 children are born with this condition annually and 6,000 of them are located in Kenya, 50–90% of children born with sickle cell disease die before they reach their fifth birthday.
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited red blood cell disorder, in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout your body. The flexible, circular red blood cells normally flow freely across blood vessels. The red blood cells in sickle - cell disease are shaped like sickles or half moons. These inflexible, sticky cells can become caught in small blood veins, causing no blood flow and oxygen to parts of the body.
As a community in Kenya, we need to educate others about the condition because a person can only know how serious it is, when they understand it or when they are affected. Pain in sickle-cell disease is poorly understood, and individuals who seek relief encounter medical as well as socioeconomic issues.
