Save the Honomu Park WWII Memorial Banyan Trees
ACTION ALERT: Two of the largest and most majestic and iconic Ficus benjamina trees on the Big Island are being threatened with destruction. Please call TODAY to oppose this action.
The Outdoor Circle has been contacted by area residents of Honomu on the Big Island where two iconic pillars of the community are being threatened with imminent destruction and need your help TODAY to voice your opposition to their removal and further action be stopped immediately. These trees can be easily saved with maintenance to alleviate safety and property concerns, and at a fraction of the cost of the proposed removal.
Both trees have been nominated for the State Exceptional Trees list, but Hawaii County's administration does not have a functioning committee to review these listings. The trees are incredible specimens and cherished by the community and are on Honomu Park land and have a combined crown canopy of 285 feet and over 100 feet tall.
Please let your voice be heard TODAY so that these trees can be saved!
Please take a few moments to call and voice your concerns to the following:
Office of Mayor Harry Kim: 808-961-8211
Office of Hawaii County Parks Director Charmaine Kamaka: 808-961-8311
Two of the largest and most majestic Banyans in Hawaii are threatened to be cut down by Hawaii County due to a complaint from a local resident citing maintenance issues and potential threat to their septic system. This Banyan is located at Honomu Park and is frequently visited by locals and tourists alike as it is located on the way to Akaka Falls.
Please call and ask for any and all action to remove the Honomu War Memorial Banyan Tree be stopped until there can be wider community input. The Hawaii County Hazardous Tree ordinance does not require that an entire tree be removed, only that hazards be appropriately addressed. Other options than removal, such as trimming, placing a root barrier must be considered, and are also more cost-effective than tree removal.
These trees are on the nominations list for Hawaii Exceptional Tree list, but since the Mayor has not appointed anyone to the Hawaii County Arborist Advisory Committee, a state-mandated commission, it has not advanced. In lieu of county action, the trees should be considered as ‘exceptional.'
Thank you for your continued support of The Outdoor Circle, working hard to "Keep Hawai'i clean, green and beautiful."
