The Onion: Fire those responsible for sexist comments directed at Quvenzhane Wallis.
Not only did “The onion” post a tasteless, unnecessary, and ultimately hurtful joke on their twitter account yesterday, they did so in a manner that suggested that the joke is the popular opinion of many in our society:
“Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c***, right? #Oscars2013”
Yesterday TheOnion had the audacity to use a derogatory term to refer to 9-year-old child for what seemed to be no reason other than to make a tasteless, unnecessary, and ultimately hurtful joke and get a bit of attention. Well you have our attention and now we want to see a change. African-Americans face too many systematic and institutionalized injustices in this country to have to also deal with incessant and pointless commentary made in the media at their expense.
As a result of yesterday’s events, I would like to petition for the boycott of the media giant and its partners. This may seem to be a bit extreme but it will take radical actions to make big changes in this country. Do I have your support in signing and promoting this petition to get the largest reach possible?
