- The Official Indonesian Government
Dear Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Official Indonesian Governors)
I recently heard that many sharks are unnecessarily killed for our needs, especially for food and was alarmed to find out that more than 25,000,000 sharks are brutally killed every year. In addition, consumers around the world are being sold shark meat, containing dangerously high levels of mercury.
I ask that you urge the Indonesian government to revoke permits that allow shark fin imports in and out of Indonesia to continue this heinous, dangerous and illegal practice.
I also urge Indonesian leadership to ensure a comprehensive plan to stop the slaughter of sharks in Indonesia. If we don't act now, the sharks' race will be extinct and the lives in the hydrosphere will be unbalanced because their diets would change. We must act now for the ocean to be well preserved.
Your immediate action is needed. Thanks for your time.
