On May 2, 1973, civil rights activist Assata Shakur, Zayd Malik Shakur and Sundiata Acoli were pulled over by New Jersey State Troopers James Harper & Werner Foerster for driving with a broken tail light.
After they were pulled over, a dispute ensued and left Ms. Shakur shot twice, Zayd Shakur killed, James Harper injured and State Trooper Foerster killed with his own gun.
After the shooting, Assata Shakur was convicted of the murder of State Trooper Forrester by an all white jury. This conviction happened despite the fact that neurologist Arthur Turner Davidson testified that the median nerve in Shakur's right arm was severed by a bullet, and it would have made the firing of a gun an anatomical impossibility.
After her conviction, Assata spent six and a half years in prison under brutal circumstances before escaping out of the maximum security wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979 and moving to Cuba. On May 2nd, 2013, 40 years after the initial incident, Assata's name was added to FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List.
Adding Ms. Shakur to the Terrorist watch list after 40 years seems both political and opportunistic considering this unique time in American history, when heightened awareness around domestic terrorism following the Boston Marathon bombings.
Please join this petition and sign it to encourage President Obama to pardon Ms. Shakur and to forgive her all charges related to the shooting on May 2, 1973.
