Miss K started this petition to The Northern Ireland Executive

Landlords are charging extortionate prices for unfurnished, unmodern and also often defective houses in Northern Ireland.

This affects everyone including working families, sole renters, non working families, disabled people etc.

Landlords are buying NIHE houses and renting them out for often close to double what the LHA rates are, pushing families into poverty, whilst trying to keep a roof over their heads, its pure greed and  downright immoral.

People who work hard to make ends meet along with people unable to work, or those seeking work, are being left homeless as they cannot afford to give half their wage or their benefit allowance to line the pockets of a greedy landlord.

Case example; Sally is a single mother to 3 children, she has a baby born after 2017 therefore recives no tax credits for said child. She hands over her entire income support weekly (alongside housing benefit/UC paying the full 3 bed entitlement) to keep a roof over their heads, meaning she has to keep 3 children and herself fed and bills paid, clothes and uniforms, milk and nappies on an amount of tax credits (or uc child element) for 2 children, alongside approx £48 child benefit.

If the landlord wasnt so greedy, their quality of life would greatly improve.

Case example 2. David works 40 hours a week on minimum wage. His landlord charges £160 a week for an ex council house, unfurnished. There is a shortage of houses so the landlord knows someone will pay his asking price. David can only afford the bare essentials due to the high rent so lives in one room of the house and does without oil often sleeping with coats on in the winter months.

If the landlord wasnt so greedy, Davids life would greatly improve.

Its about time the executive enforced some sort of regulation to stop this from happening. Its not ok for tenants to withold rent so why is it ok for landlords to be so greedy? "Getting by" shouldnt be ok in 2021 and people should be able enjoy their homes not live day to day to simply keep a roof over their heads.

Local Housing Allowance is enforced for a reason in NIHE properties so landlords should not be allowed to charge substantially more than that, especially for an ex council house.
