The Dress code in our school has always had problems. Seeing as the School system of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was established in 1960, and the most current dress code was certified in 2014-2015. which can be seen here (The Dress Code). But the reasons why the outdated dress code is outdated are as listed,

• Prevents self expression
• promotes sexists behavior 
• Predatory behaviors
• upholds racist connotation
• Practices misogyny

The dress code establishes biases towards female classmates by enforcing a narrative that students cause a distraction with their clothes. We ask, who does it distract? the students or the teachers. As it is 2021 and not 1865 students should be able to show there mid-drift, shoulders, wear durags etc….

It causes no distraction amongst student because we grew up in a expressive, empowering society, which is quite different to the society of the 1960’s. In our generation we take pride in self expression, body positivity, and so forth. But the school dress code doesn’t allow for such based on illogical beliefs of the correct, “Scholarly” way of expression.

This dress codes also subliminally nods to the stereotype that African-American students cultural practices are not suitable for school, or public life in general. So in conclusion dress code should be changed, because it’s illogical and problematic for modern life.
