Gas flaring degrades the environment and life quality of the people of Nigeria. Shell first started drill over 50 years ago and, despite the devastating effects on the Niger Delta's surrounding communities and innumerable pleas to stop this these atrocities, Shell refuses to quit. Shell continues a ten year long extension on their own promised deadlines to stop allowing oil to spill into the surrounding communities' water and the resulting "poison fires" or gas flares. There is no end in sight for these businessmen and the people of these raped lands continue to suffer. Loss of food, clean water, and basic health is a loss of dignity and must be stopped!

this is important to me because i believe nigeria can achiever greater environmental sustainability and Nigerians can enjoy their right to a clean environment if gas flaring is stopped completely. i examined the legal implications of gas flaring in Nigeria in my LL.M thesis, as against the milestone achieved in Alberta. Canada.

The Nigerian Government is reminded here to implement the 1996 "vision 2010" of bringing gas flaring to zero in 2008 following the 1984 declaration of gas flaring as illegal.

I have been to the oil rich region of this country, The Niger Delta. it is very unfair what they suffer as a result of gas flaring. their waters are all polluted, no healthy fishes for them. their roads are bad, it can't encourage business. yet the Nation's wealth is extracted from that region. in short, they are not being treated fairly. the gas flaring cause a lot strange diseases to these people but how does the rich oil companies shows they care? they only pay some fines to some few elites who sit among themselves share the money, send their children to abroad for school, medical care and if possible catch of fun. I am not from that region but as human being and a Nigeria who believe that this country belong to all of us and we must be treated equally and with respect, i feel for them.

We must make the oil companies to accountable for the spillage and guarantee the victims get full compensation for the damages made to their environments due to oil exploration. Just like is the practice in other countries. HABA
