Why this petition matters

Started by Lawrence Davies

The frontline staff of the NHS have saved hundreds of thousands of lives during the Covid-19 pandemic including that of our current Prime Minister. However, in carrying out that heroic work it has itself suffered countless tragic losses in the war against Covid. Yet still NHS staff continue the fight with a "never say die" attitude, and calm, reassuring care, which is the oxygen of hope for the future.

The nation has reaffirmed the value of the NHS within its heart during the pandemic and it was the Queen herself who stated that the "clap for carers" was a wonderful expression of the nation's true spirit. The award of the George Cross to the NHS would help to solidify and honour that British spirit. The Platinum Jubilee in June 2022 would be the perfect time on which to make that exceptional award.

The George Cross can be awarded to organisations and countries as well as to individuals. For example, it was awarded to Malta by King George VI to bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people during the great siege they suffered in World War II. The George Cross was later incorporated into its flag. If awarded, it could also be incorporated into the NHS logo.

Please stand up for and bear witness to the heroism and bravery of the NHS staff by supporting this petition.

We do not know what Britain will be post-pandemic but a strong start which acknowledges the bravery and sacrifice of the recent past, and recognises our better nature, would be a statement of our intent to seek to exhibit bravery, fortitude, compassion and fairness in the support of our people in the future.
