Marni Diedrichs started this petition to The New Zealand Government

As part of our Year 13 Law & Psych course at Rolleston College, we are wanting to create change within the system and allow all schools, or raise the decile number for schools, to have access to the Ako food program around New Zealand. The aim of our petition is to change and increase the number of schools that are able to gain access to the Ka Ora Ka Ako food program, for low-income families within schools. The Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy school lunches are subsidised by the Government for schools with students that fall in the highest 25% of socioeconomic disadvantage. There are currently 833 schools across New Zealand that are taking part in the Ka Ora Ka Ako food program. We are trying to raise awareness that it's not only lower decile schools that struggle with poverty, and are unable to afford lunches for their children. Just within our school, Rolleston College which is a decile 10 school, around 75% of those surveyed had seen a friend go without lunch. This proves to us that it is not only lower decile schools that are going without food, especially in these times after covid with loss of jobs and the world going through an economical crisis.

Having lunch provided at school ensures that the child is fed, improving their wellbeing, and better attendance and allowing their focus within school hours which can then be used to the best of their abilities. Allowing all children at any school access to food, will not only increase their academic performance but allow them to understand the importance of food and how important it is to get a nutritional meal before learning. Signing this petition will increase the chance of allowing children's health and learning process to be increased.  We all know that the children of the future depend on us to make a difference and to help things for those who follow. To help those families who struggle with gaining the nutrients their children need within food.
