Allow parents to share paid parental leave

While the new Labour-led government is making life easier for parents of a newborn by extending paid parental leave, they've rejected an amendment from National that would enable parents to share that paid parental leave between them.
Allowing parents to choose how they use paid parental leave between them gives them the flexibility to fit paid parental leave to fit their individual circumstances. Whether it's having both parents off for an equal amount of time, or just one parents for a couple of extra weeks over what they might have been able to afford, it can make a huge difference for some families.
It's 2017, and we want both parents to be able to participate as equally as possible in the raising of their children. It's time for the Labour-led government to step up, put aside partisan bickering and game playing from prior Parliaments, and put what's best for New Zealand's parents first.
