Why should students be urged to say the Pledge every morning at school? Students should not be subjected to reciting a phrase, every morning, for 180 days a year, with such a false meaning to it. In fact, the whole concept of the pledge is disgusting.

I want to begin with a personal experience of mine: in 5th grade, I refused to say the pledge; not because of political matters, just because I didn’t feel like it. One of the teachers proceeded to scold me, about how I need to say the pledge. 4 years later, after researching it, I came to discover we are not required to say the pledge at all; for it would violate our 1st Amendment Rights. The teacher was at fault, not me. I was never once told that we are not required to say the pledge, from my early days in kindergarten to 8th grade.

“I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America. And to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all.”

Let me break this down; pledging allegiance to a country at such a young age, may subconsciously cause your mind to think that America is so great. In reality? America is a divided, white supremacist, pedophile-filled government, with sickening disgusting, and selfish people. What part of that is great?

“...one nation, under God…” Many religions may not have one god, but multiple. Buddhism believes in many Gods and is one of the most common religions. Children aren’t told they aren't required to say the pledge. And they get in trouble if they don’t say it, either. This is just disrespectful to the people and their religion. Nobody ever told them they don’t need to say the pledge.

“...and justice for all.” There has been no justice for everyone. It is not justified to kill a person based on their skin. It is not justified to sentence a woman to life in jail for the death of her fetus she did not kill. It is not justified to hang a person based on their gender. It is not justified for a child to get shot in the back for holding a toy gun. It is not justified to kill a person based on who they love. I could list on and on, the lack of justice we have in our system. Now of all times, there is the least amount of justice there has ever been. Now we try to fix that. Why do we pledge that we have justice when we are far from it?

Getting rid of the pledge, saying these false things about our country, punishing kids with words for something they are innocent for, these should be reasons that we get rid of this. I hope our district and many others will get rid of this awful message. What may seem like seconds of our day, unimportant, is actually something that can change an entire person’s beliefs and emotions.

Pledge no more.
