For over 22 years, Penny Harvest has been operating under a simple premise: every penny and every child can make a difference. This education organization provides schools, free of charge, the tools, curriculum and support to empower children of all backgrounds to become critical thinkers and civically engaged citizens. Through student-led research and decision making, student leaders unite their families and communities to transform idle change into grants and community service projects to student-determined causes.

In over 700 New York City public schools, children help the neediest members of their community while developing communication skills and critically analyzing information about the charities they support. Even children who are financially disadvantaged still are able to participate: to harvest change, and then research, debate, and select the organizations that receive their grants.

None of the funds that the children raise are used to cover the overhead of this program. Operating costs include the training for educators, called Penny Harvest Coaches, as well as the development of curriculum guides and materials to aid in collection and student-led decision making. Common Cents (http://www.commoncents.org), the group that runs Penny Harvest is at risk of having to close down this incredible program.

Two years ago, the NYC Department of Education promised additional financial assistance in the running of the Penny Harvest after the organization successfully rallied all of the city’s 2,200 schools in commemoration of the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Common Cents kept their commitment, the NYC Department of Education hasn’t.

Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Walcott: Our children have been giving since pre-Kindergarten and making a difference. Please honor their efforts by keeping the promise that was made, and please keep this incredibly valuable program alive!
