Bill 1481, which is currently in committee, requires that all police officers receive sensitivity training on a biennial basis to assist them in responding to survivors of gender-based street harassment and sexual assault. This training shall be sensitive to cultural differences, gender, gender expression, and sexual orientation. We, the students of The High School for Global Citizenship in Brooklyn, believe Bill 1481 should be passed because it would help police be more aware of how to take care of the citizens they are supposed to protect. This bill would allow these victims to reveal what happened to them to the police by facilitating better communication to make the victims feel more comfortable. By making victims and everyone in the community feel more comfortable they will also feel safer and will create a better relationship between police officers and the community they serve. We believe there is a lot of tension and hostility against police officers due to many recent events, and based on research and observations we've made we see that one of the most important root causes is police training. This is why we support Bill 1481 and feel that the more we improve police training the more we can trust the policemen who are supposed to protect us. Please sign our petition to show support for this bill so that we can improve our community.
