Preserve the remains of Brechin Castle and Usine St. Madeleine sugar factories.
In newsday.co.tt on 05.03.2020 it was reported that "The Usine Ste Madeleine and Brechin Castle sugar mills are about to be demolished".
Would the money (presumably millions?) to be spent on dismantling the remains of an important part of our heritage be more wisely invested in preserving it?
Just brainstorming: A partial restoration could include a small area under sugar cane cultivation – a small production of sugar – a small railway – a small museum with artifacts like tools – machinery – work clothes – spinoff products like molasses/rum/bagasse etc. and a recreational area for families.
It could be a place where our students would have the opportunity to visit a sugar factory/museum as a part of their classes in subjects like history and chemistry. It could be a place where tourists could visit; a place where parents could take their children on an outing/picnic.
Might someone in the Ministry of Planning / Tourism / Education / Rural Development / Agriculture be interested?
