JAMAICA 's MOST FERTILE WELL-IRRIGATED FARMING LAND IS ABOUT TO BE COVERED IN CONCRETE!!!

TO STOP THIS NOW SIGN THIS PETITION!

“OUR CHILDREN WILL NO LONGER BE SLAVES TO A (backra) ‘MASTER PLAN"

If the Government of Jamaica is not prevented from bulldozing ahead with it's so-called "MASTER PLAN" for the "development" of the agricultural lands at Bernard Lodge Estate, the country's food security will be seriously endangered - and its water supply critically compromised.

The Administration has signaled its intention to commence development of residential housing, and light industrial plant on over 4,000 acres of agricultural lands at Bernard Lodge Estate. There has been no community consultation and a lack of transparency in this process. Farmers have been marginalized from the "Master Plan".

This “Master Plan” will result in the loss of thousands of acres of some of the most fertile and well-irrigated lands in the country to housing development…and consequent endangerment to the country’s food security; Commercial activity from the two neighboring cities will also be negatively impacted by this master plan. Proximity has not been considered.

The ‘Master Plan” would result in the loss of thousands of farm workers and the loss of incomes for tens of thousands of families, to short term building and construction jobs.

Also

Jamaica’s foremost hydrologist has publicly declared in letters to the newspaper that the imposition of this “Master Plan” would certainly result in a critical shortage of water supply to the area, and serious danger of seawater entering the aquifer; There has been a lack of Environmental planning and research undertaken.

The imposition of this so-called “Master Plan” is the latest in a long line of schemes to put the most productive and profitable lands into the hands of a very privileged few at the expense of the underprivileged masses whose ancestors slaved on those lands without compensation from their previous “Masters”; Its time the GOJ redressed the imbalance.

This development will in all likelihood result in increasing economic inequality, marginalization, social unrest and upheaval.

There are viable alternative sites that have not been considered in this short sighted plan.

Therefore:

WE THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY SIGN THIS PETITION SEEKING THAT this Administration IMMEDIATELY CEASE AND DESIST from proceeding with any “MASTER PLAN” for the “development” of Bernard Lodge Estate Lands.
