Capital punishment does not serve the purpose that the government and its advocates claim it does. Death penalty does not deter an individual from committing an offence. Hanging a criminal won't stop crimes. Hanging a rapist, murderer or a terrorist won't stop the heinous crimes they commit. Instead, the govt. should find out the causes behind such crimes, to see how it emanates and why it emanates. According to me, capital punishment is an emotional judgement. By executing somebody who was involved in killing or killed somebody himself, the state is being reduced to the level of the killer. Further, 2/3rds of the death sentences have been given to people who were who are economically or socially backward, Dalits and certain religious minorities. In the words of Abdul Kalam, studies on capital punishment show that most death penalties which were pending had social and economic bias. 

Gandhiji as well opposed capital punishment and said that it was a wrong form of punishment. If the person is likely to have been not as guilty as thought or innocent then the death penalty is a penalty that is completely reversible.
