Hi I am Hana, I was an Early Childhood Education program student in Langara College. As a former Waldorf teacher in China, I came to Canada with a great hope of learning Western childcare methods to support my future career goals.

Unfortunately, “my good wish and fairy tale turned into a nightmare” in a process of reporting a child-abuse report disagreement.

In May 2018, in the second semester my program, one of my classmates and I witnessed the teachers doing inappropriate behavior to young children verbally and physically in two classrooms we were separately in: some teachers laughed at the special-needs children and I saw the teacher poke a two-year-old boy’s forehead when he didn’t eat in the expected way. My classmate was not clear about the procedure of handling this kind of event. I wanted a proper investigation to protect the children. The center is place where the public would find it difficult to believe that such inappropriate treatment of children could happen.  I was suffering from great anxiety in this case, not to say that I was the only international student in the class.

Luckily, with the assistance of Health Service and Counseling Department, I was able to get rid of the pressure caused by the child-abuse disagreement.  In July 2018, with the suggestions and guidance of my professional support team. I turned to the Department and shared my concerns about the child abuse report disagreement and also my sadness and sorrow for the unreported child-abuse. September, when the new term started , I shared more thoughts around the topic we talked in September.

After that, I unknowingly became a “support target” by the ECE program and Student Conduct and Judicial Affairs.  On 2018-Oct-12, the Manager of Student Conduct sent and evaluation email to the department head of those person who professionally support me.

I heard about from them that the manager described me as “a danger working with children ", and she also  commented that my state of mind was not suitable for working with children. They told me that the possible consequence about those concerns is I would be kicked out of the program.

Anyway, the manager and ECE Department Chair decided to fail my practicum, after I turned to the surpervisor at the practicum center for a support letter of “I am not a danger working with children”. The college decided to put me on on Invuluntary Leave of Absence in November, without carefully collaborating with my professional support team based on Langara College.

June-2019, I got the evaluation email after many times request. After reading this letter, I got to know what I did around the child-abuse report was considered as inappropriate and questionable by the college.

Then, I kept communicating with the college how the child abuse case I reported was handled, and also what would the college consider appropriate to do in such dilemma of child abuse report. Since my report was deemed "problematic", I naturally felt compelled to follow up for their opinion.

From ECE program, to Dean, Vice-President, and Board of Governors Office,  Langara College totally ingored my report about the child-abuse issue and my needs of understanding the evaluation report. I received harsh treatment from them by continuing excluding me in the program, and knowingly acted against my privacy safety, and banned me from entering the college without explaining to me what certain suspension was about.

“See something, say something”, this why I want to share my story. By doing this, I hope more people would join me for asking a truth about my report about the child abuse report and the disagreement to the Department Chair from Langara College. I hope by doing so, we could create a better world for everyone, and also create a better platform for the people who hope to create a better world.
