Opera Activist started this petition to The Metropolitan Opera The Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera is one of the leading opera houses in the world, and as an institution with great influential power over both the major and minor opera companies that exist today, they are failing to use their voice to foster an artistic community that actively fights racism and serves all people. The Met has neglected to use their platform to actively support the lives of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) by continuing to stream productions that feature artists in black, brown, yellow, and red face through their highly popular online streaming service, Met Opera on Demand. Therefore, we urge The Metropolitan Opera to use its powerful platform to show the opera community and world at large that they care about BIPOC as people, and not just as props.

We demand that the Met take down any production which has singers appearing in black, brown, yellow, and red face and denounce its use in history. The Met's online streaming of operas reaches far and wide to the opera community across the world, and is a place where many people experience opera for the first time. By streaming these productions The Met allows aspects of institutional racism that pervade the performing arts community to thrive. To allow these archival recordings on their streaming service promotes Native invisibility, anti-Blackness, and advances racial injustice and inequality.

If a powerful institution like the Met is committed to making positive change, they must recognize that these archival recordings are hurting BIPOC and must be removed from public consumption immediately in order to support racial equality. The Metropolitan Opera must do better. Join us in demanding that these productions be taken down from Met Opera on Demand now.
