A right to Dignity

As a homeless woman. I have direct experience of suddenly being invisible. Perceived as lacking value, not important. Belittled and barely heard.

All peoples have the right to dignity and respect, the right to visibility and to be heard irrespective  of social standing.

I am directly impacted by the issues raised in the petition. I am speaking my truth, no longer an unheard invisible.

PETITION

On the 19th June 2017 the Contract Manager of a women only hostel in East London  sent an all-purpose letter telling "Customers" that in the next four weeks and for the first time male support workers will be welcomed into the community, advocating a positive change in the name of diversity!

This mandate was allegedly agreed and supported by the local authority and the hostel commissioning team. Yet none of the decision makers saw fit to include and consult the women of the hostel in the change process.

Fact:

Denying the women of the hostel the right to consultation directly works against the psyche of vulnerable women.

Though no formal written notification has been sent to residents the current contract manager has verbally confirmed the hostel is being decommissioned.

Regardless of this extremely sensitive and overwhelming predicament, residents are now being burdened with the additional trauma of dealing with male support workers in a female only setting.

CONCLUSION

Diversity has its place in society, however the reason male support workers have never before been employed in this female only environment was a result of positive discrimination. The ladies who reside here are deemed VULNERABLE and experience a variety of problems, including but not restricted to mental health issues and domestic violence.

The hostel is considered a SAFE place and treated like home, we move freely through the building as if at home.

The direct impact of male staff in this multicultural women only hostel will be one of devastation and restriction. The ambience will be forever changed, residents will be isolated and inhibited. Our emotional and mental well-being jeopardised.

Stand with us, have our back. Help us begin to eradicate injustice and speak the truth, let our voice be heard!
