Glenys Self started this petition to The Mayor of Cambridge and Cambridge City Councilors

We, the undersigned require that the 'intangible heritage' of the market community based in Cambridge Market Square is taken into account in the Cambridge Market Square Redevelopment Project and included in the next local plan as a policy, so it is protected and preserved for use by future generations.

This includes:

1. The heritage of the traditional market stalls, with their iconic, stripy primary coloured awnings.

2.The robust structure of the present 'stall model', which allows the multigenerational trader's community to continue supplying local and unique produce not available elsewhere and upon which they depend for continuity of business.

3.The continuity of the open market community serving as a social-hub and treasured social net work providing basic well being, goods and services for long-term residents, students and visitors.

4. The presence of small local and independent traders which gives a special and unique atmosphere to the market, providing social uplift with independent commercial start-up opportunities and supporting many local jobs and families which is intrinsic to the character of the city.

Please see

lifeoncambridgemarket.com for supporting evidence of these points.
