Reject the Proposal for Night Sports at Black Rocks Sporting Ground and protect the koala population

Lorraine Cobcroft started this petition to The Mayor and Deputy Mayor (Tweed Shire Council)

The Australian koala is an icon, but it is almost extinct due to inappropriate development. There are only about 144 koalas left on the Tweed Coast - an area where they were once prolific. Some 35 of those live in the koala habitat surrounding the Black Rocks Sporting Field. There are also osprey and curlews breeding in this area, and echidnas regularly amble along the roads.

Please don't allow development that puts these animals at risk.

The proposal to allow night sports at Black Rocks, including permitting the construction of football towers and the installation of 48000 watt lighting, will result in the destruction of beautiful bushland and serious threat to the native animal population. Clubs might apply for a liquor licence. We are advised later expansion to a 25 ha recreation facility is likely and may include facilities for motor cross sports, go karts, shooting, paint ball, golf, and more. All this in an area just metres from where koalas breed. Hoons have roared up and down the road into the sports field - a road koalas regularly cross. Locals recently succeeded in having gates installed to stop wild parties involving littering, excessive noise late into the night, vandalism, and drunken behaviour. The tyre tracks left by hoons doing burnouts on the road into the sports ground are still visible. That activity won't be able to be controlled if night sports are permitted and high powered lights are installed. Who will monitor to ensure the gate is closed after events and regulate closing time? There aren't even any resident police in Pottsville to keep the peace.

We don't need this facility. We already have two excellent sporting facilities servicing a very small village. The existing tennis courts don't need to be moved and are servicing the town well. State planning recommendations say facilities should be near schools for maximum community benefit. Black Rocks is many miles from the school.

State planning laws say development in and near koala habitat should be ''appropriate''. This development is certainly not.

Locals don't want it. They bought into this area at premium prices on the promise of quiet and the preservation of the beautiful bushland surrounding their homes. They feel cheated and betrayed that this proposal is even being considered. Some are angry enough to take their protest to the Land and Environment Court if necessary, to force Council to respect the law, ratepayers' wishes, and the environment.

More than 3000 people have already signed printed petitions asking Council to reject the proposal. Many more will sign over coming weeks. There is even interest from abroad, because the koala is loved around the world. It will surprise locals if Council doesn't receive many objections from concerned Americans and other international lovers of Australian fauna.

PLEASE REJECT THIS APPLICATION.
