Since January of 2020, the world has watched with horror as the new COVID-19 pandemic spreads from Wuhan, China to other parts of the world. As of March 7th, the infected cases within United States has risen to 456, including 8 recoveries and 19 deaths. Three cases in Montgomery County, MD, one case in Washington D.C. and one case in Fairfax County, VA are included amongst them, which puts residents living in these areas at risk. The Madeira School, located in McLean, VA and adjacent to all three aforementioned areas, are especially dangerous for becoming a hotbed for the COVID-19. As a small private school with an isolated campus, Madeira has a consists of 50% boarders, who live on campus year round and are vulnerable to contagious diseases. Therefore, it is especially unwise for the students of Madeira to continue their education on campus during this time. The spread of Coronavirus within the Ida Culver House Ravenna Senior Living Complex, for example, has shown the world the susceptibility of the virus to community transmission, which furthers the need for Madeira administration to transition the school curriculums online, so that both boarding and day students will enjoy the safety of learning with no close contact to peers who may have been virus carriers.
