Let Australian girls wear pants to school

School girls in Western Australia now have the legal right to wear right to wear pants to school, regardless of their school's policy. This basic right should be extended to school children across the rest of the country, in public and private schools. The school uniform has a massive impact on a child's physical activity, confidence, and sense of self. As a teacher in both primary and secondary schools, I see the impact of this every day. Being forced to wear a dress changes a person's whole way of being: every movement, every activity - riding a bike, sitting down, standing up, running, jumping, wrestling, you name it - must be undertaken with an awareness that 'getting it wrong' - accidentally flipping the dress up over the waist - will result in mockery and, often, in sexual harassment. Girls need to be allowed to wear practical clothing to school. Clothes that allow them to move naturally and freely, without exposing their undergarments. Let them wear pants.
