The State of New Jersey and the NJSIAA have determined that a limited wrestling season will be permitted for high school wrestlers.  Every neighboring school district (Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, North Bergen, Emerson, etc.) plans to move forward and participate in the limited season to allow these dedicated student athletes to have some semblance of normalcy in their lives after nearly a year of living through a pandemic and virtual school.  This is something that is necessary for the mental health of these student athletes, many of whom have dedicated a substantial portion of their lives to their training in preparation for their high school wrestling careers.  Leonia claims that this is about protecting the health of the students and staff; however, this claim is difficult to take seriously and accept since the district has chosen to participate in other risky contact sports such as basketball and football.  This decision will negatively affect and disadvantage the entire wrestling career for many Leonia students, as some will lose their final season, and some will lose their first.  Hospitalizations are down and over 10% of the state has already been vaccinated for COVID.  There is no reason that Leonia cannot safely participate in a wrestling season as permitted by the NJSIAA and NJ state.
