Concerned Parents of Leominster, Massachusetts started this petition to Member Leominster School Committee and

A hybrid-learning model for reopening the City of Leominster's public schools sensibly balances the public’s need for safety from the coronavirus with the children’s mental and emotional needs for a school setting. Yet, the Leominster School Committee rejected this sensible compromise between 100% in-person learning and 100% remote-learning, instead opting for all remote.

In its vote, the Committee rejected the advice and recommendations of Governor Charlie Baker, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and, astonishingly, the Superintendent of Leominster Public Schools, all of whom urge schools to provide an in-person option for students. In addition, the Committee paid no attention to Covid-19 conditions locally, which the state demands in any district's defense of a remote-only option.

However, the vote margin, 5-4, was very narrow. Therefore, we are hopeful for a new consensus on this sensible, middle ground. The longer argument for a hybrid model is here: Why hybrid-learning over remote-only

  1. We, the undersigned, petition the Leominster School Committee (LSC) to reconvene for a "motion of reconsideration" of the 5-4 vote in favor of a remote-learning model and the 5-4 vote rejecting a hybrid-learning model for reopening the district's schools. This type of motion may be raised by a Committee member that voted against the hybrid-learning model.
  2. We, the undersigned, then urge the Committee to pass a motion favoring the hybrid-learning model for the re-opening of Leominster public schools.
  3. We, the undersigned, also petition the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to reject the remote-learning model and to approve the hybrid-learning model for reopening Leominster public schools. This is also consistent with DESE’s stated goal "to start the school year with as many of our students as possible returning [safely] to in-person settings." Updated 8/12/13: The new map you created for school district guidance clearly shows that Leominster is ready for students to return to in-person settings.
