We all read with shock Michale Mathew's account of the attempted rape and assault of school girls by some school boys that took place on Norman Williams street, Ikoyi. I had gone with a colleague as representatives of the National Council of Child Rights Activists of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter (NACCRAN) and got the eye witness account on Friday, 5th May 2017 only to wake up to a newspaper publication on saturday, 6th May with the DPO saying that there was no indication of rape and only rivalry amongst students happened. This is after Ms Mathew wrote her statement and the arrested boys had confessed to the crime. In all of these, the police has not reached out to the girls.
According to Michale, the Police asked her to produce the girls and she told them that their phones had been stolen from them and that they should get the girls' information from the school and that the girls live in Obalende area. Is Ms Mathew supposed to investigate for the police? Is it not their job to locate the girls and gather evidence? The statement by the DPO is moving in the direction of 'throwing out the case' and we CANNOT allow this. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED. THE GIRLS MUST HAVE JUSTICE. PLEASE SIGN TO ENSURE THE GIRLS GET JUSTICE.
We cannot afford to have this continue in our society. I understand that this is a common occurrence as one of the girls has confirmed being raped at least twice during the course of her stay in the school and a resident also confirmed witnessing a rape just last week. This must stop and the boys must be punished. It must serve as a deterrent to others.
