My husband, CSX Railroad Police Special Agent was brutally beaten to death by Larry Elmore on July 18, 1989 as he was investigating a copper wire theft of CSX property in Harlan County, Kentucky. He was killed in the line of duty as a law enforcement officer. Larry Elmore took Shelby's personal belonging, his gun and his vehicle from the scene after he dragged Shelby's body to a creek on a stripped coal mined site. He was left there before being located the following day by Kentucky State Police, CSX police and several local law enforcement agencies. Shelby was a career law enforcement officer as he had worked six years with the Kentucky State police after serving in the US Army for 3 years. He had worked as the CSX Railroad policeman for 18 years covering most of Eastern Kentucky and parts of Virginia. His professionalism cannot be disputed.

Larry Elmore not only assaulted and killed Shelby, the law enforcement agent, but he killed my husband. He killed the father of our children who were 10 and 14 at the time. I still shudder when I remember my Dad telling me that after a day of searching for Shelby, his lifeless body was found beaten in a creek. Then, I was left with the horrible gut wrenching task of telling our daughters that their Daddy was dead.  Larry Elmore not only killed my husband, he killed a brother, a son, a neighbor and a friend. In the 25 years since Larry Elmore brutally killed my husband, I am approached frequently by persons who say they remember learning of Shelby's murder as though it was yesterday. He was a well-respected community man who shared his laughter, humor and good nature with so many. He was so proud of his daughters as he encouraged them to appreciate the love of the outdoors, the importance of learning and assuming duties around the home, as well as being responsible for their own actions. As I am always mindful of the loss of my husband, I embrace his memory and treasure the devoted love we shared. How can I forget carrying limbs from trees Shelby cut as we cleared the land where we would build our home, sitting up together with our children when they were sick, or looking forward to his kiss on the check when we would leave and return from work each day, and that last kiss as he drove off to work on July 18, 1989.

Larry Elmore has not only left a void in the law enforcement family, but also in the lives of Shelby’s many friends, his immediate and extended family and in the community in which he lived and served. Larry Elmore has left a gaping wound in the lives of our daughters and me. I hurt each time I hear the word "widow". It is harsh, aching and so lonely.  Larry Elmore made me a widow.

Please support our appeal to represent Shelby as we plead to the Kentucky Parole Board to have Larry Elmore, Kentucky Dept. of Corrections inmate # 104988, complete his life sentence for the murder of Shelby Nease.
