Why this petition matters

Philippines is indeed a country of paradise. The country whose people are hardworking, resilient and optimistic--whose culture and traditions are unique and remarkable. However, despite of those attributes which are becoming stereotypes, we can't deny the fact that, like every other countries all over the world specifically in Asia, lacks the authority when it comes to human health. Philippines is ranked 13th to the most populated country in the world with almost 112 million in population, which means in this trying times where health is an issue and a challenge to us because of the continuous global pandemic we are facing, the more cases and diseases are up to harm people. In the Philippines, access to basic healthcare services remains a major challenge. This is largely attributed to scarcity and maldistribution of health facilities in many parts of the country. About 50% of the population do not have access to primary care facilities (PCFs) within 30 minutes, which by then the person who needs help might not receive the help she/he needs. This is not fine. Moreover, healthcare in the Philippines suffers from a shortage of human medical resources, especially doctors. This makes the system run slower and less efficiently. In addition, these doctors and healthcare workers didn't even receive hazard pay especially now that also their life is on the line as they are the ones who heal and prevent the people from being killed from the virus. Not just in Covid-19 but all the diseases present in general. Till now, the country still has the issue such as changing medical needs, rising costs, and lack of infrastructure and it is sacrificing the quality of services being offered to patients. We should remember that not all people can afford deserving services as how the first class has and this is a problem where the majority of the country is poor. Now, how can we help this issue? I believe the Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC; PhilHealth) Philippine Institute for Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC) should make a change in their health responses and shouldn't just focus at urban cities but as well as the rural communities. We can make a difference--a better situation by starting of:

  1. Improve hospitals and health facilities.
  2. Employ more health workers (doctors, nurses, and midwives).
  3. Increase PhilHealth enrollment and improve PhilHealth benefits.
  4. Reduce maternal and infant deaths.
  5. Reduce non-communicable diseases.
  6. Reduce and prevent cancer cases.
  7. Lower the cost of medicines.
  8. Control the growing HIV-AIDS epidemic.
  9. Send and support more health workers and health facilities in rural areas.
  10. Distribute sure quality health supplies, medicines, and machines.

Focusing these will do a great change to Philippine health availability and standards. It is not a simple task, in spite of that, by the help and action of the Government and our private sectors who are thoughtful and are generous enough to support this advocacy, I conclude that we can attain and survive this issue we have in regards with health unavailability. Uncertainty, with the ongoing pandemic, climate change, and the elections. Unfortunately this is unsure to happen today, but there is hope and I'm clinging to that as well as my fellow countrymen. We need a change now, we should not neglect it, for our health is our wealth.
