The Importance of Pedestrian Safety ( Garfield New Jersey )
The Importance of Pedestrian Safety ( Garfield New Jersey )
Why this petition matters
Good evening, everyone. My name is Hamza Sheikh, and I am here to share a devastating experience that has recently impacted my family and me. On January 2nd at approximately 9:25pm, a tragic accident occurred at the intersection of Outwater Lane and Alaska Street. While my aunt, Shazia, was returning home from a walk, she was struck by a vehicle and taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to a head injury that caused her heart to stop.
This tragic loss has left a profound impact on my family and me, and we are confident that the responsible party will be brought to justice. However, this tragic accident has also brought to light an important issue in our community: the lack of safety for pedestrians.
That is why I am here today to petition for change. We, the undersigned, are concerned about the safety of pedestrians in our city. Despite efforts to encourage walking and biking as healthy and environmentally friendly forms of transportation, the lack of proper infrastructure puts pedestrians at risk every day.
We demand that the city take immediate action to address this issue by implementing the following measures:
Adding speed bumps, humps, and other traffic calming devices to reduce vehicle speeds in residential and commercial areas.
Installing more stop signs and traffic lights at intersections and crosswalks to improve pedestrian visibility and safety.
Implementing speed traps and other enforcement measures to deter reckless and irresponsible driving.
Improving pedestrian infrastructure, such as adding sidewalks and pedestrian islands, to provide safe and convenient routes for walking and biking.
We believe that these measures will greatly improve pedestrian safety in our city and make it a more livable and enjoyable place for all residents. We urge the city council to take action on this important issue and make pedestrian safety a priority for our community
