Make cycle helmets LAW

50 cyclists killed or seriously injured every year because of Britain’s poor roads.
Dozens of cyclists are being killed or seriously injured every year because of poorly maintained roads, figures show. (2015 most recent statistics.)
Cycling groups have warned of a “worrying” upward trend of deaths and injuries on British roads after new data revealed almost 100 people had died or been left with life-changing injuries as a result of accidents caused by potholes and cracks in the tarmac over a two-year period.
We can either tackle one of the main causes - the maintenance of the roads, which would be costly and take many years - or we can reduce the number of fatalities by increasing the number of cyclists who wear helmets.
A major study of bike helmet use around the world from more than 64,000 cyclists has found helmets reduce the risks of a serious head injury by nearly 70%.
The study also found neck injuries are not associated with helmet use and cyclists who wear helmets reduce their chance of a fatal head injury by 65%.
The compulsory wearing of bike helmets in Australia has long been a source of frustration for some cyclists, who argue it reduces participation rates. Previous studies have indicated helmet use encourages risk-taking behaviour or does not reduce serious injury to the brain.
But a comprehensive review by Australian statisticians Jake Olivier and Prudence Creighton from the University of New South Wales that drew together data from more than 40 separate studies found helmet use was associated with dramatically reduced odds of head injuries.
In some European countries, the wearing of a helmet is law. In this country, our young people carry their helmets on their handlebars because it's not cool to wear them.
Lets help these young children wear their helmets without stigma or embarrassment by making it a legal requirement. Even if just for those under a certain age, ie until they are adults and able to make an informed road safety decision for themselves.
I would like to call on the support of my local MP Tobias Ellwood and will do what I can to gain enough signatures to ensure this has to be discussed.
