In multiple case studies medical marijuana has been proven to have several benefits for acute and otherwise life threatening diseases, such as cancer, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, ADHD, depression, anxiety and a plethora of others. Patients, who to the public are burdened with these critical illnesses, cycle through several FDA approved drugs that aren’t 100 percent dependable. In addition, these drugs add on to the pain by having a hefty list of side effects.

According to the World Population Review as of January 2019 there are only 33 states that have passed laws to allow the use of medicinal marijuana. For many years the Drug Enforcement Administration has used taxpayer dollars to aid in the arrest, detaining, and raids of those who use medicinal marijuana. Senators such as Rand Paul (R-KY) and Cory Booker have promoted nonpartisan bills in the past that attempted to prevent the DEA from spending taxpayer dollars on the detainment of already “caged” people. As of today, the DEA has been progressive with their decision to improve medical marijuana research and reducing the unnecessary spending on arrest thus saving taxpayer dollars and leading to possible legalization in the remaining states.

Even if there isn’t full legalization of medical marijuana on its own it can assist along side the harmful drugs patients are being fed in order to lessen the pain they feel from their disease and drug side effects. This will improve the quality and perspective on life, regardless of the state they live in and the handicaps they endure on the day to day. Cannabis oils have been proven to increase the quality of life based on its mood enhancing abilities, and even cure physical and mental health conditions like the ones previously listed. Unfortunately, while recreational marijuana is slowly being decriminalized and reducing the negative outlook on it, there is still speculation about medical marijuana which seems to be out of order. Medical marijuana does not equate to many pharmaceutical drugs that do more damage than good like Oxycodone, Xanax, Valium, Ritalin, Adderall, and many others. Medical marijuana and cannabis in any form derives from a plant which is natural and doesn't harm animals in the production process, if grown properly. When used properly it is seen as more effective than many other drugs. Katherine King who was a pediatric Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma patient who passed in 2017 was able to live happily and almost completely pain free for a year after her diagnosis due to medical marijuana. Kings mother Jaime states that as long as she lives Katherine will have the cognitive ability of any 7 year old, but wouldn’t be able to talk, walk, hear, among many other things, stripping away all her senses by the end. Doctors informed Jaime that there are no surgeries, chemotherapy, or anything besides radiation to temporarily give Katherine time to live. However, trauma was piling up, so Jaime tried cannabinoids, which she described as giving Katherine a new outlook on life.  Not only a healthy cure for DIPG cannabis oil helps epilepsy patients, which my father suffers from. The oil helps reduce seizures ultimately eliminating them on its own or assisted with a lab drug.

While beneficial for children like Katherine and epileptics like my father medical cannabinoids cost roughly $3,000 to $5,000 and it’s only going up. Benefactors in the pharmaceutical arena want the money more than a cure. The compound annual growth of medical marijuana is by 31 percent and by 2020 there will be 22.8 billion dollars in total sales, a huge jump from the 18.2 billion dollars the country is at currently. Of the total user dollars spent 97 percent of them have seen lasting effects from using medicinal marijuana. More people in the world have a good purpose for marijuana use because 66 percent of them are for medicinal purposes. Since 2010 there have been 14 states that have legalized medical marijuana, as well as U.S. territories Washington D.C., Guam, and Puerto Rico.

Not only does the House of Representatives and the Senate need to band onto this movement, but the Supreme Court as well. With the Supreme Courts help to legalize psychoactive and non psychoactive medical cannabis in all 50 states they will be allowing patients who desperately need it to travel throughout the country without running into legal problems. The oils of this plant have life saving qualities, can be a cure, and also an improvement of life for the individuals who take it. With your help of signing this petition and having your friends, family, and strangers do the same as a country we can improve the lives of those who are ill and suffering ultimately giving them a reason to live. Through medical marijuana a cure can be found. Through proper research and legalization there could be a cure for cancer, the death kiss that takes over 1500 lives daily and 609, 640 people die yearly.  Please sign this petition for your loved ones battling a medical condition that can’t be fought any other way. Sign this petition because everyone deserves the right to live happily and healthily through whatever way they choose.
