BRING BACK THE WEDDING & FUNCTIONS INDUSTRY!

I wholeheartedly accept and appreciate the President's call; guided by the National Command Council; to ban gatherings as of 15th March 2020 and a subsequent nationwide lockdown announced on 26th March 2020 in order to curb the dangerous Covid-19 pandemic that is wreaking havoc globally. We also applaud Government's enormous efforts in attempting to protect the citizens of South Africa; as well as their ongoing measures to cautiously allow for more economic activity to resume.

However; the recent relaxing of restrictions allowing the unlocking of certain facilities to prepare for resumption of trading is contradictory and impractical to say the least. Casinos, cinemaplexes, sit in restaurants and business conferences are now permitted; yet the weddings/functions and events are NOT permitted to resume, even in smaller gatherings. These areas of trade, does not become more essential and while it is equal or similar in interests; whether entertainment or economically viable; we feel the wedding/functions industry should be offered the same leeway. It is difficult to believe that a cinema is different to a live theatre; that a casino with strangers to each other outweighs a wedding where families gather; that business conferences takes precedence over general events; that overnight hotel accommodation is safer than a 2 hour gathering; and that sit-in restaurants are less risky than function venues. While we have great respect for these other businesses: and neither do we condemn their roles: we feel overlooked and sidelined yet we also contribute to the economy of this country.

We implore the NCC to please allow the events arena to resume, on a smaller scale; as with the above mentioned businesses and to allow vendors, artistes, entertainers, sound providers, florists, hair & beauty personnel, comperes, photographers and caterers/decorators to also have a fair opportunity to earn an income. It must be taken into consideration; that future bridal couples will also need more time to plan  ahead; and thereto the unbanning of our industry needs to be realised sooner.

Please sign this petition to allow us to also earn a living; by allowing gatherings (which is family/friends and under strict Covid-19 health regulations) to resume.

We thank you.
