Canada needs to do more to reinstate democracy and stop human rights violations in Myanmar
Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs
On February 18, Canada imposed sanctions against nine Myanmar military officials in response to the coup d’état. This has had no impact on ongoing repression. Over 750 citizens have been killed by the army so far this year. Activists in Myanmar advise us that the country is precariously close to becoming a failed state and may fall into a civil war. We believe more needs to be done.
Canada should:
· Demand that the military officials who are repressing Myanmar’s citizens immediately stop this repression as well as the detention of citizens including Wai Moe Naing, one of the many brave citizen-activists trying to return his country to democracy.
· Demand the release of prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi and call on the military officials to restore democracy and reinstate the duly elected parliament.
· Advocate that the military officials responsible for the murder of Myanmar citizens be held accountable and be brought to trial for their crimes.
· Join like-minded countries to acknowledge and support the recently formed Myanmar national unity government (NUG), which could help restore democracy to Myanmar.
· Contribute generously to international humanitarian appeals underway to help alleviate the suffering faced by millions of citizens whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the coup.
Your urgent attention to support the people of Myanmar will hopefully contribute to preventing an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.
