Canadian mining corporations are impacting the way in which Canada is perceived on a global scale. This is particularly true in some parts of Latin America, where Canadian owned and headquartered mining companies have an increasingly strong presence.
In recent decades, it has become apparent that many of these corporations are simply disregarding the basic human and environmental rights of the countries in which they engaging in resource extraction.
These human and environmental rights violations include (but are not limited to):
-Unfairly displacing communities to acquire access to resource rich land,
-Providing unfavourable and unsafe working conditions for employees,
-Engaging in harsh chemical processes that cause significant environmental breakdown and negatively impact human health.
Perhaps what is most alarming about these violations, is that the “true north strong and free” does not have much in place to hold these corporations accountable for the harm they have caused and continue to cause. We believe this is simply is NOT okay.
The Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability drafted model legislation to appoint a Human Rights Ombudsperson. An independent Human Rights Ombudsperson would investigate allegations and make recommendations to the mining companies and the Canadian government. This Ombudsperson would be independent of political or corporate influence and accountable to Canadians through public reporting. They would play an important role in protecting human rights internationally and improving the performance and reputation of Canada’s extractive sector. Legislation would provide access to Canada’s Court system.
