Sanction Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo, their families and their officials, for genocide.

Dear Honourable Chrystia Freeland,

There's a genocide taking place in Nicaragua by the hands of President Daniel Ortega, VP Rosario Murillo, and their officials. More than 145 people have been killed in less than 53 days, and over 1,000 others have been injured. While it took Venezuela's President Maduro 3 years to reach 130 dead protesters, President Ortega surpassed that number in less than 2 months... and the death toll keeps rising each day. The majority of victims are/were youths. They are being kidnapped on the streets, tortured, raped, and killed. Universities, Hospitals and random homes are being raided and terrorized with violence by national officials & police. This all began on April 18th, 2018, when Seniors/pensioners took to the streets to peacefully protest in opposition to pension cuts (a law that passed the same day) and were met with violence by police. The next day, outraged by hearing seniors being beat up for protesting, University students joined the pensioners in their peaceful demonstrations. Since then, throughout the country, peaceful protesters are dying over freedom of speech/ freedom of expression, as the Ortega-Murillo government undermines the country's democracy. Basic human rights are being grossly violated by the Ortega-Murillo regime. While they sent their own children abroad to enjoy the monetary benefits and benefits of freedom of other countries (like Canada), they continue to deny those same rights to their own people.

We understand that Canada is pro-human-rights across the globe. As our Foreign Affairs Minister, we the people request that you put in place sanctions against the genocidal Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo, and their officials. We Canadians request a freeze on their assets and to place travel bans on these human-rights abusers. We trust your quick and sound judgement.

Thank you.
