Last Friday was International Women's Day and last night there was another candle light vigil, in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, this time for Preethi Reddy  murdered (allegedly) by an ex male partner.  Katherine Haley’s partner, Shane Michael Robertson, was jailed last week for her murder. These murders are not 'one offs.'

According to the White Ribbon Foundation (in Australia):

'...On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner...'

'...1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15...'

'...Almost 40% of women continued to experience violence from their partner while temporarily separated...'

'...1 in 6 women have experienced stalking since the age of 15...'

The male perpetrators of violence directed at women  (and the statistics are that it is mainly men)  once charged and convicted, need to have their names and identifying details placed on a violent offenders list as is currently done for sexual offenders.  This list needs to be compiled on an Australian wide basis and to be readily accessible via an app.

Despite the millions of dollars poured into aggression management and other courses designed to change the behaviour of  violent men, there is no reliable research showing these programs are effective in changing such behaviour.  The violent men who enter these programs exit them with little change in the behaviour that the programs are designed to address.

Given the limited success of attempts to curb male violence directed at women, the next step is to make readily available the perpetrators history of familiar partner violence. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Such information can be collated through a national violent offenders register.

I therefore ask the Honorable Member to use his office to establish such a register.

One candle light vigil for a women murdered by a man known to her is shocking.  To have more than one is a national disgrace. These powerful ceremonies of naming and remembering must not become an established feature of our national life.
