Increase permanent accommodation at Randwick Public School

As you may be aware, Randwick Public School is exceedingly over capacity at 850 children this year.

For most of our school community, they returned to the new school year to discover that their prized basketball courts had been replaced by 4 large demountable classrooms.  This has caught the whole school community by surprise.   It has significantly reduced open play space for children, thus increasing the strain on other spaces at recess and lunch time.

Even more concerning is that the demountable expansion is set to continue, given the forecast growth of the school population over the next few years.  Randwick Public School has grown from 765 students in 2013 to 804 in 2014 and now to 844 students this year.  The school is forecasting that “in area” enrolments will soar to 1000 students by 2018.

We are fortunate to have an obvious and accessible solution on our doorstep.  The distance education provided by the Open High School adjoining our site does not support a local student population and can be run from any number of locations. We believe that this site offers both the most timely and economic option to accommodate the student growth at Randwick Public School.

During a visit to the school by both of you in August last year, we were promised a Master Plan to address this issue.  This Master Plan has not been forthcoming.  We are also concerned that unless the Master Plan is based around access to the Open High School,  it may be many years before we see an adequate alternative.

If the state government continues to actively encourage greater population density in our electorate, then it needs to make larger schools that service local communities its’ highest priority.
