Every day the correctional officers of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice put their lives on the line to keep the citizens of the great state of Texas safe. They deal with some of the worst of society, they or often assaulted and called names, but yet or quick to help when the same offender has an emergency. The top pay for a correctional officer is 3240.70 after 91 months of service. This is very low compared to other states and local correctional officers pay. In fact Texas ranks in the bottom 5 out of all states pays for correctional officers. Texas Correctional Officers work in all kinds of weather conditions and that means at times working in buildings that may have temperatures over 105 degrees. Because of the pay and working conditions the state prison system has reached a critical point. You may have heard about the 4,000 sign on bonus offered across the state for going to work at some unit. This has helped some, but most the new officers don’t stay. We need to help keep what we have and show them the state of Texas appreciates what they do. We need to pay more money and help raise the staffing levels back up to a safe level for officers and offenders. I urge you to sign this and call your local Senator to get TDCJ correctional officer a 10% pay raise that has already been approved by the house.
