Keep codeine off prescription in Australia.

My name is Steve Campbell Grant and I am a pharmacist operating a practice in the Sydney CBD. I am concerned about the TGA's recommendation to make codeine available only on prescription.
Such a move would not only drastically affect my business but would adversely affect Australia's 6000 strong network of pharmacies and their role in managing pain within the community. If this rescheduling occurs patients with minor ailments and patients with chronic pain would find it increasingly difficult to obtain appropriate and timely treatment. In other words this new rule would simply create more hassle. Such a move will only add to the onerous schedule lumped upon our doctors and the medicare system. If there is any substance that requires rescheduling it is alcohol and not codeine. Genetic differences in the bodies use of codeine are not significant enough to warrant this change to prescription only.
Codeine should remain in the hands of pharmacists and be supplied directly from pharmacies and not be transferred to prescription only. Please consider signing this petition. I hope to get the Health Minister to overturn this decision.
